Heavy Rain to Continue in Sikkim, Landslide Alert Issued
Apr 22, 2025, 5:45 PM | Skymet Weather TeamGangtok, the capital of Sikkim, has recorded 70 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, marking the highest single-day rainfall in April 2025. So far, the state has received 188 mm of rain this month, inching closer to the monthly average of 296.9 mm.
The persistent downpour can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation over North Bangladesh and another over Central Assam, along with humid winds from the Bay of Bengal. These conditions are pumping moisture into the region, leading to widespread rain and thunderstorms.
The intense rainfall is expected to continue for the next 48 hours, after which scattered showers may persist. With the current trend, Sikkim is likely to surpass its April average rainfall. However, the heavy rains increase the risk of landslides and mudslides, particularly in vulnerable hilly areas.
Temperatures will remain moderate, with daytime highs of 21–23°C and nighttime lows of 14–15°C, ensuring cool and pleasant weather. Residents and travelers are advised to stay alert for possible disruptions due to landslides and waterlogging.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and precautionary measures are being taken to mitigate risks. Commuters should avoid unstable hillside routes until the weather stabilizes.
