June Begins on a Squally Note Over Delhi; Severe Storm Hits Several Parts, More Showers Likely
Jun 2, 2025, 1:13 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe month of June has started on a stormy note for Delhi/NCR. Loud peals of thunder, howling, speedy winds and flashes of lightning, followed by sharp showers, were the highlights of NCR weather yesterday.
The strongest dust storm of this season hit the airport Palam in the evening, wherein the gusty winds reached a massive speed of 96 km/hr. Inclement weather conditions resulted in diversions, delays, and cancellations of flights in and out of Delhi. Good that the diversionary weather behaved across most airfields, and a total of 14 flights were diverted to Chandigarh, Jaipur, Amritsar, Dehradun, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad. Small mercy that, unlike the previous storm, there was no loss of life, as such.
Yes, the trees were uprooted, outages were there, commuters were troubled, and the traffic snarled in some areas. Everything is not yet over, and more such stormy conditions are in the offing.
There is a western disturbance over North Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir, supported well in the upper air. Also, there is a cyclonic circulation over North Punjab and the border areas of North Rajasthan and the Central Pakistan region. An east-west trough is extending from the system to Uttar Pradesh across Haryana, Delhi, and Northeast Rajasthan. Streaming southwesterly from Gujarat and South Rajasthan are fueling the moist winds right into the core of the system.
Pre-monsoon activity in terms of dust storms, thunderstorms, strong winds, and patchy showers is likely over the entire region for the next three days. The national capital will witness more squally weather accompanied by moderate thundershowers between 02nd and 04th June, more aggressively on 03rd June 2025. The remnant effect may partially impact 05th June as well.

Earlier, Delhi accumulated an all-time high rainfall of 186.4mm in May 2025, beating the previous high of 165mm in May 2008. The base station at Safdarjung made a wet start in June, measuring 17 mm of rainfall on the first day itself. As the monsoon normally arrives at the end of the month, the city has a normal modest rainfall of 80.6mm in June.

The day temperatures are likely to remain suppressed due to persistent pre-monsoon weather. The maximum temperature will remain below normal to hover around 36°-37°C for the next three days. Following clear weather conditions after 05th June, the mercury may reach close to 39°–40°C on the weekend. Weather activity on most occasions will occur in the late evening and night hours.
