Heavy Rains Ease Out In Mumbai: Big Relief Tomorrow
Mumbai witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall over the last four days, bringing the city’s life to a halt. The intense downpour disrupted basic amenities like electricity and water supply in some areas. Low-lying areas of the city, including Dadar, Chembur, Matunga, and Andheri, were waterlogged, severely affecting road traffic. Air operations were also hit hard, with airplanes aborting landings, making short-notice go-arounds, multiple landing attempts, and diversions to nearby aerodromes. Normalcy is being restored, and daily life is gradually getting back on track.
As predicted, the intensity and spread of rainfall began to diminish last night, and most parts have seen a significant reduction in rain. The Santacruz airport observatory recorded 209 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, ending at 8:30 am today. A large portion of this occurred yesterday morning and during forenoon hours, with just 3 mm of very light rain added between 2:30 am and 8:30 am this morning. The base station has now surpassed the 1000 mm mark for August 2025—the highest in the last five years. Previously, 1240.1 mm was recorded in August 2020. With 11 days remaining in the month, the city may surpass the all-time high of 1254 mm set in August 1958.
The weakened low-pressure area now lies over East Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh, with cyclonic circulation marked up to medium levels. The system's convergence zone extends to Madhya Maharashtra and the Konkan region. The east-west shear line persists and currently runs across 21°N from the west to the east coast. The north-south trough from South Gujarat to Kerala has weakened over Konkan-Goa and Coastal Karnataka. The cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Arabian Sea has shifted over Saurashtra and the adjoining Arabian Sea. With these systems weakening and weather patterns shifting, rains are expected to ease substantially in Mumbai today. Sporadic moderate showers with strong surface winds will continue, but the scale and coverage will drop significantly.
As these weather systems weaken further tomorrow, Mumbai can expect much-needed relief. Mild weather conditions are likely to persist through the weekend of 23rd–24th August. Rains may return at the start of next week, but the intensity won’t match the current spell.
