Pre-Monsoon 2025, The Rainiest In Over Three Decades: May 2025 Rainiest Ever On Records

Pre-monsoon season of 2025 made the slowest start. Courtesy of the rainiest May, with 126.7 mm of rainfall against the normal of 61.4mm, the season ended with an excess of 42% rainfall. The season recorded a total of 185.5 mm of rainfall against a normal of 130.6mm. The month of May nearly equalled the seasonal rainfall and fell short by a whisker. This seasonal rainfall happens to be the highest since 1990, when the pre-monsoon registered a total of 210.7 mm of rainfall. In any case, pre-monsoon 2025 was the second highest ever since 1901, when the reliable records began documenting.  

However, the month of May 2025 has become the rainiest ever since 1901, as it recorded a monthly rainfall of 126.7 mm, as against a rainfall of 112.9mm in the month of May 1990.

The largest contribution to the surplus seasonal rainfall came from Central India, followed by the South Peninsula, which registered an excess of 236% and 125%, respectively.

The other two homogenous regions of Northwest India and East & Northeast India witnessed a marginal shortfall of 14% and 8%, respectively. Nearly unprecedented, all the subdivisions over the Central and South Peninsula registered large excess rainfall of over 60%.

Konkan & Goa, Gujarat, Saurashtra & Kutch were the lead subdivisions with over 1000% surplus rainfall. The largest of all was Saurashtra & Kutch, with a seasonal excess of 1462% rainfall.  Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh remained the least rainy, with a deficit of 32%. Nearly 89% of the area of the country realized normal-excess-large excess rainfall, leaving a mere 11% as deficient.
