Heavy rains returned to parts of Karnataka on Thursday, June 12, prompting authorities in Dakshina Kannada to declare a holiday for all schools and anganwadis. Udupi district also followed suit, announcing a closure due to the intense weather conditions. Strong winds and heavy downpours continued through the early hours, raising concerns in coastal areas.

After a two-week pause, the southwest monsoon has picked up momentum once again. Coastal Karnataka, particularly Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, is expected to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with gusty winds sweeping through the region. The monsoon had earlier made a rapid advance across the country but stalled after covering more than 35% of India by May 26.

Now, a fresh weather system is forming over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to move inland over the next few days. Rainfall activity will gradually increase across Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh from June 16 to 18, as the system moves westward.

By June 19–21, the monsoon is likely to cover East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, and parts of central India, eventually reaching areas near Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan. This renewed monsoon push is expected to bring much-needed rain relief to several parched regions in the coming week.
