The pre-monsoon season ended on a promising note for the Indo-Gangetic plains, including Uttar Pradesh, bringing widespread and timely rainfall. However, since the official onset of the southwest monsoon on June 1, rain activity over Uttar Pradesh has drastically reduced.

Between June 1 and 5, rainfall has been highly deficient across the state — East Uttar Pradesh is currently rain deficient by 58%, while West Uttar Pradesh is short by 45%. Unfortunately, this deficiency is likely to widen in the coming days as weather conditions are expected to remain largely dry and hot across the state for at least the next five days.

A cyclonic circulation that had been persisting over parts of Northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining regions is now weakening. As it becomes less marked, northwesterly dry and hot winds will begin to dominate the region. This change in wind pattern will sweep away any remaining moisture, leading to clear skies and cessation of rainfall activity.

As a result, day temperatures are expected to rise gradually across most parts of the state. Already, cities in southeast Uttar Pradesh such as Prayagraj and Varanasi are recording maximum temperatures near 40°C. In the coming days, many other districts including Jhansi, Mahoba, Lalitpur, Banda, Chitrakoot, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Lucknow, Kanpur, Kannauj, Rae Bareli, Agra, Hathras, and Aligarh may also experience temperatures in the lower 40s.

Although official heat wave conditions are not expected at this time, several areas may experience heat wave–like situations due to prolonged high temperatures and dry air.

A change in weather is likely beginning June 11. A fresh cyclonic circulation is expected to form over eastern India, drawing humid winds from the Bay of Bengal. This system will initially affect eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh, bringing scattered rainfall, and gradually extend its influence to other parts of the state. Along with rain, temperatures will subside, and the eastern arm of the monsoon is expected to advance once again into East Uttar Pradesh.
