Udhagamandalam which was anglicized to Ootacamund and further shortened to Ooty was once the abode of the Toda tribe who worshipped a sacred stone.

The stone was probably referred to as Otha-Cal in the local language while Mund referred to 'village', in the Toda dialect. Ooty is a town settled in the Nilgiri Hills of the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated at an elevation of 7,350 Ft and has all the staples of a charming hill station. Ooty's magnificent tea plantations and red-roofed bungalows still carry echoes of its colonial past.
