Rain in Kolkata during Durga Puja

The city of joy is all set to rejoice the festival of Durga Puja that falls on September 26 which is tomorrow. While the pandals have been put up in various parts of West Bengal including Kolkata to celebrate Durgaotsava during the auspicious Navratri season, light rains are also on cards to dampen the Pujo celebrations.

Though rains in Kolkata have remained on the lower side almost throughout September, this time too very heavy rains are not anticipated in the city. In fact, in the last 24 hours also, not many spots of rain have occurred over the entire state.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Burdwan recorded 9.7 m of rains, Midnapore 9.4 mm, Jalpaiguri 6.4 mm while, Bahrampore witnessed 6 mm of rains. On the other hand, Kolkata failed to record any spell of rains during the similar time frame.

As per Skymet Weather, now, isolated rains are likely to occur over many parts of the state on September 26 and 27 at a few places. But the intensity of these rains will not be so high to disturb the Durgaotsava.

Skymet Weather further reiterates that a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the North Bay of Bengal by September 28. In the wake of this, the moisture content over Gangetic West Bengal and at many places including Kolkata will increase resulting in a slight increase in rains.

Thus, on September 28 and 29, scattered light to moderate spells are likely to commence over both Gangetic as well as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. The amount of rain during this period is also anticipated to be between 15 and 20 mm at some places of Kolkata and other adjoining areas.

However, by September 30, the intensity of rains may once again reduce that will help in carrying out the Durga Visarjan ceremony smoothly. but one or two locations may still receive good rains.
