Active monsoon conditions to continue over Western Himalayas

August 17, 2022 9:48 AM |

Ladakh along with Jammu and Kashmir have received surplus rain until now. Ladakh is in the excess category with 50 % surplus whereas Jammu and Kashmir is in the normal rain category with 15% surplus rain. On the other hand, Uttarakhand is deficient by 13% and Himachal Pradesh by 10% but they are still in the normal rain category.

During the last week, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have witnessed heavy spells of rain leading to mudslides and landslides. Humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are feeding moisture over Western Himalayas. During the last 24 hours also, moderate to heavy rains lashed many parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Dehradun recorded 46 mm of rain, Shimla 32, Tehri 64, Mandi 65, Quazi Gund in Jammu Kashmir 37 mm and Manali in Himachal Pradesh recorded 23 mm of rain. We expected light to moderate rain with one or two heavy spells to continue over Western Himalayas during next 24 to 48 hours. Intensity of rain may increase once again by August 18 and may continue for at least next 3 to 4 days.

We expect rain deficiency of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will certainly go down in a week or so. Tourist who are heading towards hilly destinations must take precaution as chances of landslides and mudslides are probable.
