Cyclone Maha

The Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a well marked low Pressure Area and is currently over the Comorin region and is expected to concentrate into a Depression by tonight or early morning hours of tomorrow.

This weather system will continue to move in a north northwest direction initially, moving to Southeast Arabian Sea and may intensify further as conditions are favourable for further strengthening. Sea surface temperatures are in the order of 29-30 degrees Celsius and the vertical wind shear is also low. Thus, the fourth Cyclone of this year in the Arabian Sea is all set to form and will be named as Maha, a name given by Oman.

Maha will be the fourth Cyclone in Arabian Sea to form after Vayu, Hikaa, Kyaar. Usually, the number of Cyclones is more in Bay as compared to Arabian Sea. This year, however, the situation is different and Arabian Sea has already had three Cyclones and the fourth is in line to form very soon.

The reason for more cyclone formation in the Arabian Sea can be attributed to the positive Indian Ocean Dipole. In fact, this IOD is the strongest in the history of recordkeeping with which warmer sea surface temperatures are aiding in the formation of Cyclones.

Cyclone Maha is all set to form in the Arabian Sea, and will most likely track the similar route followed by Cyclone Kyarr. The likely cyclonic storm may move in westwards direction towards Yemen or Oman coast.

It will not directly impact the Indian mainland. However, before forming into a Cyclone, which means in the next couple of days, heavy to very heavy rains may be seen over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, parts of Karnataka along with parts of Lakshadweep.

Wind speed will be strong to very strong along the Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka coast along with the height of waves at least around 15 feet.
