Amritsar shivers at minus 1 degree temperature

Sub Zero in Amritsar Amritsar reels under bitter cold as the temperature drops to -1°C, lowest for the season so far. The low minimum temperature observed on 28th morning is 6 degrees below normal for the holy city of Punjab. Amritsar that has been witnessing nil visibility for last few days, also observed very dense fog in the early morning hours.

While minimums in other parts of Punjab such as Chandigarh, Patiala and Ludhiana hovered around 7°C, they dropped to sub- zero in Amritsar.

Since December, minimum temperature in Amritsar has been hovering around 1°C, occasionally reaching closer to zero degree level. In last two years, the holy city did not experience sub-zero temperature. The lowest it observed has been 0.3°C in 2014 and 1.4°C in 2013.

The all-time lowest minimum temperature in Amritsar has been -2.9°C witnessed in 1989 on 12th January and 10 year lowest has been -2.6°C in 2005 on 20th January.

Due to extreme chill and winds, Amritsar witnessed the sub-zero temperature as against yesterday’s minimum of 2.8°C. The cold wave condition in Amritsar and other parts of North India is expected to persist for few days.
