Bengaluru Floods

Early morning hours of Thursday saw panic in North and Western Bengaluru as flash floods wreaked havoc over sine parts of Dasarahalli, Nagasandra and Chikkabidarakallu. These flash floods occurred due to breaching of Doddabidarakallu Lake at around mid-night.

At least 300 houses and around 100 vehicles were submerged. The lake is spread around 40.6 acres, and at around 1:30 am, heavy flooding occurred after the lake breached its banks and caused inundation over industrial suburbs, and residential layouts.

Areas including Bhavani Nagar, Andanappa Layout, Chennanayakanahalli, Rukmini Nagar Layouts were the ones observing flooding. As per a senior engineer of BBMP, the point of the breach was where Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) had laid a pipeline to draw sewage water for treatment which caused the loosening of the bund.

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao had alerted the quick response team (QRT) and Civil Defence wardens to immediately take up rescue operations, after he came to know about water logging from Soladevanahalli and Bagalakunte police station limits.

After flooding water submerged 300 houses, the entire locality went dark and volunteers used torch lights and began pumping out water with the help of Fire and Emergency Services personnel. Residents were rescued and taken to the elevated location by the volunteers.
