Heatwave in Mumbai

Financial capital Mumbai was rather hot during opening days of February between 01st and 03rd. Day temperature shot up to 36.3°C on 02nd February, about 5°C above the normal. With a humidity level of more than 50% in the afternoon, the discomfort index was high for Mumbai and suburbs. The temperature in the remaining 2 days for Mumbai also was more than average at about 35°C. The mercury level during the night also remained more than the normal at 19-20°C.

Mumbai invariably gets hot during the 2nd half of February and warm days with sultry conditions are on the cards this season as well. However, the current spell of heat over Mumbai will ease out with maximum temperature dropping to about 31°C and minimum sliding down to about 14-15°C, 2-3°C below the average. Such conditions will endure for the next 4-5 days providing relief from the onslaught of oppressive humidity.

In the past also, Mumbai touched 39.1°C on 22nd February 2012 and exceeded 38°C in February 2015, 2017 and 2020. The all-time high for Mumbai of 39.6°C on 25th February 1966 remains secured so far and is not likely to be breached during the month. The lowest maximum temperature for Mumbai during the month hovers around 27-28°C on most occasions albeit the lowest of all in the last 10 years was 24.2°C recorded on 09th February 2019.

Presently there is onshore trough extending from Kerala to South Gujarat with an embedded cyclonic circulation over Konkan region. Also, the cessation of weather activity over North India shortly will resume the flow of colder winds across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Accordingly, the temperature is going to drop for the capital city providing relief to Mumbaikars.
