The onset of Southwest Monsoon was delayed over the state of Kerala, however, at the time of onset, the state did see some active to vigorous rains. But, the Southwest Monsoon became silent soon thereafter and so did rains in Kerala. The weather almost became dry in the state, thus making it rain deficient by a great margin. Today the rainfall deficiency in Kerala (from June 1 to July 15) stands at 46%.
However, the weather has comparatively been better for the northern districts of the state as places like Kannur, Kozhikode, have observed good rains in the last few days. For the southern and interior parts of Kerala, the conditions have been disappointing due to dry weather, barring occasional light rains.
According to our meteorologists, the probable Low-Pressure Area would change the weather conditions of Kerala during the coming days. This strong system would soon develop in the west-central Bay of Bengal and increase the Monsoon surge all along the West Coast including Kerala. Due to enhanced Monsoon surge, rainfall activities will increase July 18 onward in the state. A marginal increase in the Monsoon rains is expected tomorrow as well, but a significant increase would be witnessed from July 18.
During this period (July 18 to July 22), heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy spells may lash Kerala. In fact, heavy downpour may even lead to localised flooding and water-logging.
In the wake of these activities, the rain deficiency would ease out to a great extent and water levels in the dams would also improve.
By July 23, rains will once again taper over the region, however, on and off light to moderate rains with isolated heavy spells may continue, particularly in the northern districts of the state.
