The temperatures of most parts of Maharashtra continue to rise and there seems no respite from the soaring mercury levels. So much so that a few isolated stations in Vidarbha are still reeling under heatwave like conditions.

Meanwhile, the other parts of the state continue to record the mercury levels nearing or beyond the 40-degree mark.

On Monday, heatwave like conditions prevailed in Chandrapur and Brahmapuri with the temperatures mounting to 44.5ºC and 44.3ºC respectively. The other regions of Vidarbha that whirled under intense heat conditions include the stations like Akola and Wardha with 43ºC each.

The other divisions of the state like Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Marathwada also recorded the daytime highs at upper 30’s but mainly remained under 40 degrees Celsius.

During the aforementioned time frame, Nashik recorded the maximum temperature at 38.8ºC, Kolhapur 37.5ºC, Pune 39.4ºC, Mumbai 34.2ºC, Dahanu 35.3ºC, Alibag 34.5ºC, Sangli 39.6ºC, and recorded the daytime high at 34ºC each.

As per Skymet Weather, the temperatures are expected to rise further over most parts of the state. Isolated pockets of Vidarbha would continue to reel under heatwave conditions. The temperatures may rise and may reach around 37-38 degrees Celsius.  However, isolated thunderstorm along with strong winds may affect the weather of Vidarbha and the adjoining Maharashtra in the next 24-48 hours.

This thunderstorm activity would be due to the trough extending from Odisha to South Kerala across Vidarbha. In addition to this, moisture incursion is also taking place over the region. The affected stations would be Nanded, Chandrapur, Gondia, and Nagpur.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers are advised to continue the harvesting of fruits preferably before 10.00 in the morning and after 4.00 in evening. The transportation of the fruits should be done at night. Due to heatwave like conditions, farmers are advised that irrigation management should be done in maize crop with an interval of six days.

Due to increase in temperature, irrigation management, mulching and application of Bordeaux mixture on the stem of the plant should be done in the citrus orchard. After harvesting of crops, plowing should be done in fallow lands immediately.
