Chennai has crossed its normal rainfall for the opening month of the monsoon. June is the least rainiest month with 55.8mm rainfall. Both the observatories, Minambakkam and Nungambakkam, have crossed the average mark and measured 89mm and 56mm rainfall respectively. Rain and thundershowers have been experienced in 3 spells, one each in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd week. More rains are likely over the city and suburbs between 30th June and 05th July.
Southwest monsoon activity has become subdued over the central and southern parts and least over north India. Active conditions have prevailed over east and northeast India, with seasonal trough shifting close to the foothills over these parts. Such conditions are ideal for developing a trough along Tamil Nadu and the South Andhra Pradesh coast. This feature, along with the heat trigger accentuates rain and thundershowers over the region. These conditions are expected to last for the next one week. The emergence of a fresh system over the Bay of Bengal and coastal region marks the cessation of a wet spell.
Most of this weather activity is expected during the later part of the day and night. Rain and thundershowers could become more intense on 01stand 02nd July. Weak wind conditions during the day become conducive for prominent sea breeze in the evening. Days will continue to be hot and sultry with partial cloud cover. Mercury level will remain in mid 30’s during the afternoon and drop to the high 20’s during the night.
