This year, during the Northeast Monsoon as many as three cyclonic storms developed in the Bay of Bengal. While the first two storms, Kyant and Nada failed to intensify further than a cyclonic storm, the present storm Vardah has become a very severe cyclonic storm.

The system was expected to move in a west-north-westward direction towards the Andhra Pradesh coast but the system changed its direction and now is moving in a west-southwest direction. Now, the cyclonic storm Vardah is expected to cross the North Tamil Nadu coast and South Andhra Pradesh coast by the afternoon hours tomorrow.
In fact, the landfall is likely to be very close to Chennai. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rains are expected over Chennai and its adjoining areas by tomorrow. Today, the rainfall intensity will remain between light to moderate. By tomorrow, isolated areas are also likely to receive extremely heavy spells.

Not only this, the possibility of waterlogging in low lying areas due to high tidal waves cannot be ruled out. Some areas may even witness flood like conditions.

Fishermen have been advised to stay off the coast for at least the next 24 to 48 hours. All in all, Chennai rains will revive and will be the heaviest this season.
