October 31, 2018 10:20 AM |

Chennai rainsWith Northeast Monsoon on the door, Chennai rains have made a comeback. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Nungambakkam Observatory has recorded 11 mm of rain, while Minambakkam has seen 6 mm.

At present also, Chennai has been recording rains and thundershowers of varying intensity since early morning hours. More spells of rains are likely during the days over most parts of the state.

According to Skymet Weather, Northeast Monsoon circulation has been established covering large areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. A trough of low is extending from this along the coast. As per weathermen, these rains are the precursor to the arrival of Northeast Monsoon, which is possible in the next 24-48 hours.

We expect rains to continue for another 3-4 days over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with Chennai recording light to moderate rains.
With these rains, sky will remain cloudy leading to slight drop in day temperatures, bringing relief from hot and sultry weather. Meanwhile, nights would be comfortable.

November is the rainiest month for the city, with the city recording over 60% of its annual rainfall during the three-month long season. Being a rain shadow area, Tamil Nadu including Chennai does not record much rains during the Southwest Monsoon.
