Chennai and Tamil Nadu receive rains, on and off activity to continue

December 7, 2019 10:40 AM |

Subdued Monsoon conditions are continuing over Tamil Nadu as well as most parts of South Peninsula.  During the last 24 hours also, only scattered light rains with one or two moderate spells occurred over Tamil Nadu. However, rain activities increased marginally over Chennai. The Nugambakkam observatory of Chennai has received 4 mm rains in the last 24 hours.

As a matter of fact, for the last many days weather was almost dry over the region. Now, also, we only expect scattered on and off light rain to continue over Chennai and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. We do not expect any intense or heavy rains over Tamil Nadu for the next one week or so and Monsoon will remain subdued over the state.

Over the time, the easterly wave will also get weakened and there will not be any significant weather activity over Tamil Nadu.

Now, a Low Pressure Area is likely to develop over Maldives area which will intensify further and move in Northwest direction in the Arabian Sea. Whenever a weather system develops over the Arabian Sea, it reduces the rain activities over Tamil Nadu. The moisture concentration will be more around the weather system. As a result, dry winds will prevail over Tamil Nadu leading to decreased rains.

This year, we have seen numerous weather systems developing over the Arabian Sea during Northeast Monsoon as well as Southwest Monsoon, which have reduced the rain activities over Tamil Nadu. This weather system will do the same. So, we do not expect Monsoon to revive over Tamil Nadu for the next one week or so.
