Chennai has been witnessing on and off light rains for the last few days. However, rains picked up pace on Wednesday and many parts have witnessed short spells of intense showers today.

In fact, weather remains conducive for few more spells today. According to Skymet Weather, northeasterly winds are now gaining strength in Bay of Bengal that is why coastal areas of Tamil Nadu including Chennai are experiencing rain activities.

Although interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been recording good rains since last many days due to various weather systems. A cyclonic circulation has been persisting over Kerala and adjoining Interior Tamil Nadu and a trough is running from this system up to Lakshadweep Islands.

Not only this, north-south trough is running from North Interior Karnataka to Interior Tamil Nadu that keeps on oscillating from east to west or vice versa. As the trough shifts eastwards, it would keep giving on rains over Tamil Nadu and shift accordingly.

We expect on and off rains for another 24 hours over Chennai. Thereafter, intensity of rains will decrease and weather will become almost dry.

However, Chennai rains would commence again by October 21 and most probably by then, Northeast Monsoon will also set in. Until then, partly cloudy sky will continue along with some thunderstorm activity.
