Chennai Rains 1

The month of August has been exceptionally dry for the city of Chennai. It was not until the day of August 28, that the city received some decent showers of 28 mm. But again the city has witnessed some good rainfall activity in the last 24 hours.

The reason for such rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over adjoining Tamil Nadu and Comorin area is extending between 4.5 & 5.8kms above sea level. Another cyclonic circulation is over North Andhra Pradesh coast extending up to 3.1kms tilting southwestwards.

Due to both these systems the rainfall activity has increased significantly over North Tamil Nadu including Chennai. This rainfall activity is likely to continue over North Tamil Nadu & Chennai for the next 2 days.

In the last 21 hours, rainfall recorded over Meenambakkam observatory of Chennai recorded 27 mm of rains, whereas Nungambakkam recorded 11 mm of rain.

As the cyclonic circulation over North Andhra Pradesh coast is likely to become less marked. This weakening of the weather system over the area will result in decline of rainfall activity over these areas.

At present the city of Chennai is rainfall deficient by 35% for the Monsoon season. Till date the city has received 205.7 mm of rains against the normal rainfall of 316 mm of rains.
