Cold wave conditions likely over Northern Plains

Northern Plains of India namely places like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and North Rajasthan continued to witness mild winters till now.

The plains have witnessed mainly dry weather barring few traces of rain this season. This is the major reason why the winter chill remained absent and minimum temperatures have settled above normal only.

In past few days, significant increase in night temperatures has been observed. All thanks to the warm and humid easterly-southeasterly winds blowing across the region. Besides this, due to lack of snowfall over the hilly terrains since the commencement of winters, the cold and dry northerly-northwesterly winds were not as cold as they should be to impact the temperatures across the plains.

Since last 4 to 5 days, moderate to heavy snowfall is going on over the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Now we expect these snowy showers to continue for another 24 hours.

The humid easterly winds are likely to change direction during next 24 hours. The icy northerly winds from snow clad mountains will start blowing over the region, as a result drop in minimum temperatures by 4 to 5 degrees during next 2 to 3 days can be expected, leading to cold wave conditions.

Though sunshine is very much likely to come up, but day temperatures will witness a drop by 2 to 3 degrees. Thus, we can expect next week to be the coldest of this season.
