Delhi has been seeing significant rise in temperatures since a few days now. However, the month of March has been the coldest for the city in last 21 years. Winters took time to fade out completely from the northern plains as frequent Western Disturbances kept affecting the hills with snow and rain, which in return impacted the plains.
According to the temperature data available with Skymet, the maximum till March 20, were settling below normal. If we take into consideration the average temperatures, the mean maximum temperature was 28. 2°C, which is approximately a degree and half below the normal mark. The last time when Delhi had recorded below normal temperatures was in 1998.
The minimum temperatures too settled below normal. At 13.8°C the average minimums were below the normal mark by 1.8°C. The last time such a temperature was recorded was 28 years ago.
Criteria for monthly average temperatures
The monthly averages are the mean of maximum and minimum figures taken separately over a span of 30 days. They provide a snapshot of weather trends over a period.
March is the transition period from the Winter season to Summers. Usually a brief Spring season follows in between. This time however, the transition came quite rapidly.
