rain in northeast indiaWeather conditions are turning conducive for increasing pre-Monsoon activity over Northeast India. As have been reiterated by Skymet, rain and thundershowers will continue in this parts of the country for rest of May. In fact, pre-Monsoon showers will give way to Monsoon rains by the first week of June.

Skymet Weather predicts the onset of Monsoon 2016 over Kerala in between May 28 to 30. Generally, Southwest Monsoon covers Northeast India simultaneously with Northeastern states. Therefore, we can say that there will be no break in rainy days over Northeast India.

As of now, only Meghalaya and Nagaland are receiving some rain and thundershowers. During last 24 hours, Cherrapunji received 36.6 mm of rainfall and Shillong 14.8 mm. Kohima in Nagaland also received 10.2 mm of rains. The intensity of rainfall will keep increasing now with the probability of heavy to very heavy rain and thundershowers in few places.

The cyclonic circulation over Northeast India is gaining strength. The trough extending from this system up to Bangladesh becomes more or less a semi-permanent feature during this time. Moreover, back-to-back Western Disturbances moving across the western Himalayas will finally reach Northeast India. Moisture incursion is also taking place from the Bay of Bengal. All these factors will combine to bring continuous rains in the “seven sisters”. Rainfall will be less intense in the NMMT region comprising of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura. Assam and Meghalaya will receive more rains.

Northeast India has already witnessed the first wave of floods this year. Though most parts of India witnessed heatwave conditions in the absence of pre-Monsoon showers in April, Northeast India received continuous rains. The cumulative rainfall deficiency in April was just 19% for the country even though 27 subdivisions of the country received scanty or deficit rains while 4 subdivisions receive no rain at all.
