May 30, 2017 12:18 PM |

Northeast Monsoon

Severe Cyclone Mora has crossed Bangladesh coast near Chittagong by morning hours of May 30 between the Cox’s Bazar and the port of Chittagong. Mora has been bringing in heavy to very heavy rains over coastal parts of the country since last 24 hours and is likely to continue for another day.  The speed of the winds at the time of landfall was between 90 kmph and 120 kmph.

Not only this, heavy to extremely heavy rains can also be seen over Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur during the next 12 hours. Squally winds to the tune of 40-50 kmph can also be seen over these states.

The  system has also been responsible for the onset of Southwest Monsoon 2017 over Kerala and parts of Northeast India.

According to Skymet Weather, due to the decrease in moisture content after landfall, we expect the cyclone to degenerate rapidly into a deep depression and subsequently form into a depression in the next 12 hours. Weathermen predict that Mora will further move in north-east direction towards Northeast India. However, by the time it will will cross the Indian region, Mora would have degenerated into a depression.

But the system will be still capable of bringing moderate to heavy rains over Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

Fairly widespread good rains are expected to continue till May 31 but the intensity of rainfall is likely to decrease thereafter.

Due to heavy rains and strong winds,  power outrage and communication lines may be affected due to the falling off tree branches. Minor damage to huts and kutcha houses is also expected. Even, low-lying areas may get flooded due to the heavy rainfall over these northeastern states.
