December to also start on a rainy note in Peninsular India

chennai rainsThe Northeast Monsoon had been very active till November 24 in all five sub-divisions of Peninsular India. Several places in the region, particularly Tamil Nadu had received very good rains till then. But from November 25 the rainfall activity became a little subdued and rain became confined to south coastal parts of Tamil Nadu.

However, the weather activity has again picked up in the region due to a cyclonic circulation in the south-west Bay of Bengal. In last 24 hours good rain has been observed in Peninsular India, particularly Tamil Nadu.

According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Coonoor and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu received 68 mm and 51 mm of rain, respectively in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday. Pamban and Chennai, the other coastal areas of Tamil Nadu also recorded 42 mm and 27 mm of rain, respectively. The interior parts of the state also witnessed some good rains. For instance, Madurai recorded 50.3 mm of rain, Kodaikanal 51 mm, Tiruchirapalli 30 and Coimbatore 13.

During the same period of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Tirupati in Rayalaseema witnessed 35 mm of rain, while Kurnool recorded 8 mm of rain. Coastal Andhra Pradesh was also lashed by some good rains. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Nellore received 21 mm of rain, while Sri Harikota and Kakinada observed 19 mm and 8 mm of rain, respectively.

Some places in Kerala also received Northeast Monsoon showers. Cochi received 17 mm of rain, while Thiruvananthapuram saw 10 mm of rain last the city.

The capital of Karnataka, Bangalore also recorded 3 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday.

Meteorologists at Skymet have forecast more rains in the region for at least 3 to 4 days. Rainfall activity will be more intense in Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh. The interior parts of Peninsular India will also receive light to moderate amounts if rain during this period.
