Decrease in snowfall expected over Hills of North India

This winter season the active western disturbance commenced to affect the hills of North India very late so much so that only during last week of December. The first snowfall was recorded around December 25.

Thereafter in the first week of January 3 successive western disturbances with no gap continued to give moderate to heavy snowfall over all the three hilly states of North India.

Snowfall is still going on and in the last 3 days Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand have received good snowfall. All roads leading to Jammu & Kashmir is blocked as of now.

Now we expect this rainfall/snowfall activity to continue for another 24 hours but gradual reduction in the intensity can be expected. From tomorrow onward weather conditions will improve and sunshine is very much likely to prevail.

Still 2-3 days are needed for the weather to clear up completely so the highways can function normally. Post 2-3 days normal life will continue over these states.

But in spite of sunshine, minimum temperatures are expected to fall over hills as well as adjoining plains but maximum temperatures will rise gradually. We can say that this was first major snowfall of this season.

Now another active western disturbance is expected to reach the northern hills of India around January 16; around that time all the three states are expected to receive fairly widespread snowfall till then weather will remain dry and cold.
