Deep depression over West Bengal sustains strength, to weaken now

Rain in KolkataThe deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal has been sustaining its strength for the last 24 hours. During this period, the system has moved further west-northwestwards and at present, it is seen close to Bankura.

The system is currently centered at Latitude 23°N and Longitude 87°E. It will continue to move in west-northwest direction at a speed of around 10 kmph.

However, now the system is likely to start losing its strength. According to Skymet Weather, the system is travelling in unfavourable weather conditions though land. Therefore, due to the lack of moisture feed, it will weaken rapidly into a depression and thereafter, into a low pressure area by evening.

Weathermen predict that in the course of its movement, the system will continue to give moderate to heavy rains over parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and eastern parts of Bihar during the next 24 hours.

Subsequently, moderate rains will continue over Bihar and parts of Jharkhand but it will decrease significantly over Gangetic West Bengal. Kolkata would now see light to moderate showers only.

Cities such as Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bhagalpur, Gaya and Patna may see moderate to heavy showers.

The system has already lashed West Bengal with heavy to extremely heavy rains on Monday. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Burdwan recorded 126 mm of rain, Shanti Niketan 118, Kolkata 71 mm, and Bankura 66 mm.

Parts of Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar have also see light to moderate rains and thundershowers.
