The water level in the Yamuna river has come down to 204.73 metres on Thursday at 1 pm from 206.60 metres on Wednesday. At 7 pm, the level dropped even further and was at 204.65 metres. The river in Delhi crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Monday. The government is continuously keeping a check on the situation.
As the rainfall activities would decrease further in North India, the water inflow from the hills would be lesser. Thus, Yamuna’s rising water will recede further and is likely to go down below 204-metre mark by today.
In the past two days, the volume of water being released from Hathnikund barrage has been reduced to 10,000-15,000 cusecs per hour. As a result of this, the water level in the Yamuna has receded.
Due to recent good rainfall, the state of Haryana was releasing huge amounts of water from the Hathnikund barrage. Moreover, the hills of North India were experiencing heavy downpour. The combined effect of this led to an increase in the water level of Yamuna.
On Sunday, between 6 pm and 7 pm, over eight lakh cusecs of water were released by Haryana. It takes approximately 36 to 72 hours for waters to reach the National Capital Territory.
Although the water levels have eased out, residents who have been evacuated from flood-prone areas of Yamuna are requested to stay in the camps set up by the government bodies for next two days, until the situation comes fully under control.
According to Sanjeev Kumar, SDM Preet Vihar (East) and nodal officer for the relief and rescue operations, ‘ The process of evacuation is over, however, relief operations are continuing. Food and other basic amenities including medical support are being provided. Soon the families would be shifted back to their places.’
Over 24,000 people have been evacuated so far, 21,300 out of them were taken to relief camps. Over, 1,200 relief tents were set up by the different government bodies in 53 locations.
The traffic operations over the Old Railway Bridge were resumed on Wednesday. However, for safety point of view, the Tibetan monastery market remained closed on Thursday.
