Delhi Gets Hailstorm, Heat Wave To Return Early Next Week

May 5, 2022 12:44 PM |

The national  capital and suburbs were lashed with typical pre monsoon weather activity yesterday, the 1st of this season so far. Earlier, there were feeble incidences in the 2nd and 3rd week but very limited in area and force. The weather activity on Wednesday was spread across Delhi/NCR and even beyond.

Spatial extent covered neighbouring districts from Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Hailstorm lashed some parts and squally winds kicked up dust, followed by fleeting showers. Inclement weather conditions impacted aviation, diverting domestic and international flights at Palam.

Heat wave had abated a day prior but the wet spell resulted 10°C drop in temperature in a matter of 2 hours. The minimum temperatures which were running 4-7°C above the normal, plunged below average at all places, the lowest being (18.4°C) at Ridge about 6°C below the mark. Rainfall was also measured at most observatories with respective moderate amounts of 7mm, 7.5mm and 9mm at Ayanagar, Pitampura and Ridge. The mercury also dropped below 40°C at most places.

There is a western disturbance moving across the northern parts and also an east - west trough running close to Delhi.  These were the features responsible for the weather activity in the past 24hr. The weakened remnants of the systems may cause sporadic thunderstorm with gusty winds at few places, today and tomorrow evening/night. General clearance is expected on the weekend and later.

Heat is likely to make a comeback with mercury climbing to 40°C, tomorrow onward. Soaring temperature of 43°C or more is likely on Monday and later. Accordingly, heat wave conditions will clamp down the capital city once again. Clear sky with strong surface winds, amounting to ‘loo’ conditions are likely to be witnessed for the next week.
