The weather of Delhi and NCR transformed last evening from being constantly dry for the last many days to witnessing thunderstorm and thundershowers along with light rains. In fact, Pre-Monsoon rains had been escaping Delhi and the adjoining regions for almost a month now.
March went almost dry for the city this year as so was April until now. However, these rains eradicated the dry spell and are expected to occur in a few parts of the city today as well.
On Friday, Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory recorded 5 mm of rains, meanwhile, Palam observatory registered 5.4 mm of rains. Ayanagar and Ridge observatory also recorded 8.9 mm and 2.4 mm of rains.

Additionally, due to a thunderstorm, the visibility remained poor and nil at isolated parts. Highest wind speed of 35 knots was also observed at Palam Airport.
As per Skymet Weather, a Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir has induced a cyclonic circulation over Northeast Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana. Another feeble cyclonic circulation is seen over Northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas. Due to the combined effect of these weather systems, many parts of northwestern plains including Delhi recorded thunderstorm or dust storm activities.

However, now the cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana has further moved westwards and lies over northwest Madhya Pradesh. Moreover, the Western Disturbance is also moving away eastwards.
In the wake of this, pre-Monsoon activities over Delhi and NCR would now reduce. However, a spell of rain and thundershower may affect a few parts of the city today as well.
Thereafter, another fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region around April 8. This would result in another round of rain and thundershowers over northwest India including Delhi and NCR leading to increased pre-Monsoon activities from April 9 onwards.
