The month of January was pretty good for national territory, Delhi and adjoining states in terms of precipitation. Intermittent rains were a sight and Delhi has recorded 100% surplus rains for January, which is double the normal average. The forecasters have predicted another spell of good rains in Delhi and NCR from February 5-7. The last spell of rains were witnessed on January 31. During these rains, the pollution levels went down and were somewhere in the ‘ fair to moderate’ category.
At present, the Air Quality Index in Delhi is 304. The pollution levels are swaying in ‘very poor’ to ‘poor’ zone. Dense to very dense fog was also observed at many places in Delhi today morning. As per the experts, similar weather conditions would continue for another 24 hours. The intensity of fog would remain dense to very dense during early morning hours of February 5. Since the winds will be light and calm in nature, the pollution levels are expected to rise further.
A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching Western Himalayas by tonight and it will induce a Cyclonic Circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan. Thus, light rains are on card for Delhi and NCR on the night of February 5. Thereafter, on and off rains might continue until February 7, rains would be light with few moderate spells at some places. Chances of hailstorms in Delhi and NCR cannot be ruled out. With these rains, lies a hope that pollution might fade away and the levels are expected to improve then.
As per Skymet Weather, dense fog will dissipate February 6 onward. Minimums during this time are expected to rise further and might touch the double-digit mark. They will be around 12°C-13°C, whereas, day temperatures will be between 20°C-22°C.
Thereafter February 6, gradual fall in temperatures can be witnessed. After the passage of Western Disturbance, the icy cold winds from Western Himalayas would once again commence February 8 onward, leading to fall in both minimums and maximums. Despite of clear sky and bright sunshine, winter chill will persist. The minimums around that time will be around 8°C and maximums somewhere around 19°C. With this, the pollution levels would gradually see a rising trend.
