March is the transition month from winter to spring and a precursor to the pre-monsoon season of April and May. March 2025 had a mixed bag of weather conditions. The month of March had no extreme heat, no 40°C, no heat wave, and the least rainfall of 2 mm, but still, the month ended with a mean maximum temperature of 32.3°C. The last two days of the month, 30th and 31st March, recorded day highs in excess of 32°C and 33°C, respectively.  The mean maximum is about 2.4°C higher than the monthly normal of 29.9°C. This happens to be the highest mean maximum since Mar 2024, when the average for the month was 33.4°C. The last two years, the mean maximum was recorded at 30.8°C and 30.6°C in 2023 and 2024, respectively. However, the mean minimum temperature for the month of March 2025 was registered at 15.5°C, just a whisker below its monthly normal of 15.6°C. It means that, while the days were slightly warmer than normal, the nights remained fairly cool and pleasant with minimums ranging in the low teens (</= 15°C) on about 18 days of the month.

In the past, the base observatory at Safdarjung had occasionally exceeded 40°C in March. The highest maximum of 40.1°C was recorded on 30th Mar 2021. The all-time record of the highest maximum of 40.6°C, in March 1945, remains intact. The day temperature today is expected to reach about 34°C. The temperature is likely to increase further as the week progresses. The maximum temperature is likely to range between 36°-38°C, around mid-week on 02nd/03rd April 2025. The start of next week will possibly witness the first 40°C of the season, between 08th and 10th April.

The month of April finds the maximum monthly jump in temperatures. As compared to March, the mean maximum temperature rises to 36.5°C, a spike of nearly 7°C, and the mean minimum also rises by a similar margin to stay at 21.3°C. The weather conditions are likely to remain dry for the next about 10 days. A fair amount of sunshine will trigger the rise in the day temperature. However, the surface winds are likely to become strong, off and on, providing some relief from the soaring heat. The winds are likely to remain moderate to strong today, 04th & 05th April, and again next week between 08th and 10th April 2025.
