The winter chill has finally enveloped Delhi and NCR that has been recording a week full of fog-free mornings. This can even be made out from the fact that New Year began on a foggy note for Delhi and NCR with the minimums too settling at season’s lowest.

Delhi witnessed the first episode of the very dense fog of the season today with the visibility to dropping to nil. The thick layer of fog even affected the air, rail and road transport in the city.

As per Skymet Weather, the month of December witnessed marginally higher temperatures and the December of 2017 was one of the warmest December in the recent years. However, on the contrast, the month of January has started to show its winter traits and the minimum temperature in Delhi’s Safdarjung Observatory settled at 5.7°C, Palam Observatory also recorded the low at 6.8°C which was the lowest of the season.

Now, due to dense fog, the day temperature is also not anticipated to rise much therefore, the maximums which were until now running above normal are also expected to fall 2-3 degrees Celsius below the normal.

Whenever dense fog persists for a longer duration, the winter chill is felt due to cold weather conditions. Now also, the days will not be a bright sunny one as foggy weather and the winter chill is expected to prevail over Delhi and NCR today and tomorrow.

The days will remain more on the colder side. At present, successive Western Disturbances are also affecting the Western Himalayan region due to which light winds from southwest and southeast direction are blowing over the northern plains including Delhi and NCR leading to formation of dense fog

After 48 hours, winds are likely to once again change the direction and minimums will fall further, anticipating to even reach close to 5 degrees or lesser in the coming days. Thus, January will bring back the lost winter chill of December.
