Delhi shivers under cold day conditions

December 19, 2014 12:33 PM |

As reiterated by Skymet, Delhi will witness cold day conditions for next 48 hours. A bone-chilling day left Delhiites shivering as the Palam Observatory in Delhi recorded 15.2°C as the maximum temperature on Thursday.

Other places in the city to observe cold day conditions were Narela which recorded 15.1°C as maximum, Mungeshpur 14°C, Najafgarh 14.6°C and Pusa 15.1°C.

Western parts of Delhi were clearly colder than eastern parts, across the Yamuna River. Most people preferred staying indoors as the sun remained hidden behind patchy clouds and thick fog.

The maximum temperature in Faridabad was 18.2°C, Noida recorded 18.5°C as maximum, Indrapuram 16.9°C and Hindon 16.8°C.

Safdarjung remained below normal but slightly higher than Palam at 17.6°C. However, people here remained better off as they have already received the bite of winter on December 14. Maximum temperature plunging to 16°C and rain coupled with heavy winds made Sunday the coldest day of December for Delhi in last five years.

A maximum temperature of 16°C and minimum of 14.4°C on Sunday exhibited a diurnal variation of 1.8°C which means that even though there was no extremely chilly night, the day was significantly cold.

The Western Disturbance, which brought the first winter rain of the season in Delhi, has moved away. Icy cold northwesterly winds sweeping North India lead to significant drop in day temperatures. Another Western Disturbance is likely to affect North India during the weekend. Rain and snowfall will be confined to the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. The plains will not receive rain but high clouds and fog could hamper visibility in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana.
