Delhi is heading for drier days ahead in the month of April. The maximum temperature has reached or exceeded 40°C on five occasions so far this month. The highest temperature of 41°C was recorded on 08th Apr and 18th Apr 2025. The city observed mild heat wave conditions on three days during the first ten days of the month. As it normally happens, the temperature is expected to rise during the last week of the month, wherein a daytime high of 42–43°C is likely.

The city has received only 0.7 mm of rainfall during this month against a normal of 12.5mm. The average monthly rainfall for April, as such, is the lowest in the pre-monsoon season. In the last ten years, the city observed nil rainfall in April 2016 and just about 0.3mm in 2022. However, April 2022 was one of the hottest Aprils with day temperatures in excess of 40°C on 17 days. Also, the monthly highest of 43.5°C was recorded on three consecutive days between 28th and 30th April. Last year, the highest temperature remained 40.5°C in April.

An active western disturbance is moving across the northern mountains. Peak weather activity is over; yet, scattered rain and thundershowers are likely for the next 24 hours. The activity will remain confined to the hills. After the clearance from tomorrow onwards, only a mild weather system is expected between 24th and 25th April. Delhi will stay free from any pre-monsoon activity. There is a likelihood of dry-induced cyclonic circulation in the proximity of Delhi between 25th and 30th April.

The day temperatures are likely to hover close to 40°C on a daily basis. The mercury is expected to reach about 42°C at the fag end of the month. Despite the vicinity of trough, rainfall is unlikely in the remaining days of the month. Yes, the low-level winds may change to easterly, warm and moist in nature between the 25th and 30th of April.

An airplane has to take off and land mandatorily into the wind for safe operations. Like last week, a change of winds caused chaos in terms of delays and diversions at Palam Airport; there could be a repeat of the same due to the non-availability of the main instrument runway during this period.
