As expected and predicted, Delhi/NCR was lashed with rain and thundershowers, last night. The weather activity was in two spells: the first one at midnight and the second one in the early morning hours. Showers were accompanied by loud thunder and were spread across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad with almost equal intensity. The activity seems to be over for the time being and another spell is likely next week.
Base station at Safdarjung and Palam observatory recorded 4mm and 10mm rainfall, respectively. The downpour provided some respite from the dense fog which had earlier created havoc, yesterday morning. However, this relief may not be for long and the fog will make a comeback soon. The minimum temperature also rose to double digits on the expected lines today and is likely to drop to reach 6°-7°C once again, around the weekend.
There is an induced circulation coming up over parts of Punjab, North Rajasthan and border areas. It is a dry circulation not triggering any weather activity. But, the wind pattern will change to the moist easterly, in the lower levels over Delhi and the neighbourhood for the next two days. In all probabilities, the dense fog is likely to come back tomorrow morning and stay put on Saturday-Sunday, as well. Once again, the poor visibility will trouble the commuters, impact air operations and cause delays in the arrival/departure of the trains.
A fresh western disturbance is arriving over the mountains on 18th Jan. Also, an induced circulation will come up over North Rajasthan and Haryana on 20th Jan. Under the combined influence of these systems, Delhi and its suburbs will have another wet spell between 21st and 23rd January 2025. Hopefully, the weather conditions will become better for Republic Day and the threat of rain will recede. However, the fog and mist will keep haunting the morning conditions, adding chill as typically seen around this national festival.
