Dense fog to take a short break in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, UP; cold nights to continue

Most parts of the country remains fog free

Fog remains widespread across Indo-Gangetic plains comprising of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar throughout the winter season. Apparently, the intensity of fog does vary from shallow to dense.

Usually, there are very intermittent instances when the entire stretch witnesses dense to very dense fog, as the characteristic of the fog is such that it leaves some pockets.

Past 24 hours saw an improved situation, the best in the season so far in terms of fog. Why? Because the fog remain confined to limited regions.

Delhi Palam saw very dense fog of short duration this morning. During the same time, many parts of the city and its adjoining regions remained fog free.

Similarly, Amritsar and Ludhiana that witnesses dense to very dense fog, observed shallow fog today morning. In fact, Lucknow which has been steadily engulfed with thick fog remained nearly fog free this morning. On the other hand, Varanasi and Gorakhpur reported nil visibility. Northeastern states too observed shallow to moderate fog in some parts during the same time frame.

The lowest visibility was observed at Palam Delhi, Bahraich, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Bhagalpur and Purnea, wherein it dropped to less than 25 meters each. The same way, Sultanpur, Patna, Malda and Kailashahar also saw visibility less than 50 meters each.

The visibility in Silchar and Safdarjung Delhi was less than 200 meters each, while Gwalior, Gaya and Tezpur saw lowest visibility at less than 500 meters each from 02:30 to 05:30 hours IST of today.

Weathermen expect similar weather to prevail across the northern plains during the next 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, with the approach of a fresh weather system, dense to very dense fog will make a comeback over major portions of the region by January 22.

Meanwhile, Northeast India would continue to witness shallow to moderate fog over scattered places in the coming days.
