The well-marked low pressure area lying close to Tamil Nadu Coast and adjoining Southeast Bay intensified into a depression on May 17. At present, it is lying 240 km south-southeast of Chennai. It has been showing signs of strengthening and we could see it intensifying into a deep depression during next 48 hours.
It’s a crucial time for Tamil Nadu. Simultaneously, the peripherals of this weather system are extending up to Kerala. Southern parts of the state have been receiving very heavy showers. Thiruvananthapuram in extreme south received heavy showers to the tune of 66.8 mm and rainfall figures kept decreasing as we moved northwards.

With the weather system gaining strength, rainfall will continue over Kerala for one more day. Thereafter, rainfall activity will decrease over the interiors of Kerala. Basically, the depression in the Bay of Bengal is drawing moisture laden winds from the sea, which are travelling across the state of Kerala. Therefore, rain in Kerala for the time being is also being attributed to the depression in the Bay.
Skymetweather had predicted heavy to moderate rainfall in Kerala a couple of days back. On May 16, Skymetweather had predicted a 4-day rainy spell to lash Kerala.
