It was a rather poor February for Kolkata. The capital city managed to record only 3.3 mm as against the normal of 21 mm of rain. However, March started on a comparatively good note as the city has been observing decent showers for the past two days. And with pre Monsoon season setting in, we expect the rainfall figures to improve significantly.
Since the last 48 hours, Kolkata has been observing pre Monsoon showers of mild intensity. And meteorologists at Skymet have predicted more rain during the next three days. There are chances of moderate showers in many parts of Kolkata during this span.
Considering this, there are chances that the city may inch towards achieving its monthly average rainfall target of 35.2 mm in the first week itself ( already a total of 15 mm of rain has been recorded in the last two days).
These weather activities are a result of the Western Disturbance and its induced Cyclonic Circulation over North India. Moreover, a Trough could be seen extending across Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. The marked Trough is separating the flow of easterlies and westerlies, thus resulting in rain.
As the systems will persist for some more time, we expect moderate spells of rain in Kolkata from March 5 to 7. Although March 8 onward, the weather activities may reduce, the city stands a chance to observe light spells of rain.
Kolkata experiences a short span of winter, starting from mid-December and lasting till mid-February. From the second half of February, the maximums temperatures rise and settle somewhere beyond the 30s.
While, in the month of March, the temperatures have the tendency to soar and settle in the mid-30s. Mercury even hits 40 degrees Celsius by this time. From March to May, Kolkata observes decent pre Monsoon activities. The season of Monsoon steps in from June while July and August are the rainiest months.
