Dry Weather Conditions Over Punjab-Haryana, Temperature Rise Likely
Feb 7, 2025, 3:00 AM | Skymet Weather TeamNorth India is in the midst of the thick of the winter season. However, the rains have been rather few over most parts of Punjab and Haryana states. The months of January and February being the critical and rainiest winter months, prolonged dry spells do not augur well for the agriculture sector and the farmers. The Rabi season is reaching its far end now and the large seasonal rainfall deficit surely figures as a sore point for a large section of farmers.
Rainfall deficiency over most districts of Punjab is critical. Some parts of the Malwa region are a shade better than others. The Doaba and Majha regions are the worst hit. Districts like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarntaran, Jalandhar, Hoshiyarpur and Moga have a large deficiency, in excess of 75% rainfall. Ludhiana, Patiala, Ropar, Mohali and Sangrur are a shade better but still parched in many pockets. Haryana is no better off. More so, the districts like Kaithal, Jind and Hisar are terribly hit, and Ambala, Karnal, Rohtak got little solace but are not adequate enough to ward off worries.
A chain of western disturbances has been moving across the mountains over the last 2-3 weeks. However, most of these systems had been weak and lacked the potential to bring rain to the plains. Even the mountain states have huge rain and snow deficits till now. Shortly, a western disturbance is approaching the Western Himalayas and keeping the weather activity going for the next 4-5 days, between 08th and 12th Feb. However, like the previous systems, the activity will remain mild to moderate and confined to the hills only.
The arrival and passage of the weather system will raise the temperatures significantly over the plains. An appreciable spike in the mercury will be visible between 09th and 12th Feb. A brief pause on 13th and 14th Feb, when the temperatures will take a dip. However, the rise in temperature resumes once again on and after 15th Feb 2025. Weather conditions across the region are likely to remain dry till the middle of this month.
