Exceptionally heavy rain in Puri, highest in 24 hours ever

January 21, 2016 12:27 PM |

Rain in PuriPuri in Odisha has recorded extremely heavy rain of 118 mm in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, this was an exceptional rainy spell for the coastal city, which usually observes mere 12.7 mm of rain during the month of January.

It has also broken the all-time high rainfall record for a span of 24 hours which stands at 73.8 mm recorded on January 04, 1966. Not only this, it is also the highest rain recorded in the entire month in last 10 years.

The heavy rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and Odisha and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal. This led to formation of convective clouds over Coastal Odisha on Wednesday morning.

Puri recorded 70 mm of rain between 08:30 am and 11:30 am. Thereafter from 11:30 am till 02:30 pm, city recorded 47 mm of rain. Subsequently, the intensity of rain reduced significantly and only 1 mm of rain was observed till 8:30 am on Thursday.

According to Skymet Weather, the prevailing cyclonic circulation has moved away and is now expected to remain as a trough of low off the Odisha coast. As a result, rain activity will take a back seat but isolated light rain cannot be ruled out.
