Exhausted by sultry weather in Kerala? Relief in the offing

February 8, 2016 12:15 PM |

Kerala WeatherKerala has not received any rainfall activity for several weeks. The last spell of good showers hit Kerala during the Chennai deluge. Now, the situation is building up for the occurrence of scattered light rains over Kerala from February 9 to 11.

This spell of rainfall could be attributed to the development of a wind discontinuity. Northerly/northwesterly winds will meet the northeasterly winds coming from the Bay of Bengal over Kerala.

This merging of warm and moist winds with relatively cooler and drier winds will lead to the development of rain-bearing clouds over coastal areas of Kerala and Karnataka. From February 11 to 15 isolated light to very light rains will continue over most parts of Kerala.

The trough of low over Southwest Bay of Bengal will gradually become more prominent. On February 15, parts of Tamil Nadu and interiors of South Kerala will also receive scattered rains.

As of now the day maximums are settling between 34 and 37 degree Celsius over Kerala. Afternoon hours are quite hot and humid. Some relief from the sultry weather condition is likely due to the spell of rain.  Temperatures may go down marginally and settle in low thirties.

In the absence of any weather activity, maximum temperatures across Kerala have been settling above normal for several days now.

Meteorologists at Skymet had earlier predicted that the present weather conditions may lead to increased amount of pre-Monsoon showers in Kerala this year. The state generally starts witnessing pre-Monsoon activity from the middle of February till the end of May.
