December 24, 2014 1:25 PM |

Soaked in Yuletide spirit, the charm of Northeast India is accentuated during Christmas and New Year. The ‘land of seven sisters’ is an unexplored and unexploited beauty where Christmas is widely celebrated in the traditional way.

Comprising of the seven states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur, Northeast India is an amalgamation of splendour and serenity. And the essence of this region is best enjoyed during this time of the year.

Christmas in Meghalaya

In this "abode of the clouds", Christmas is an occasion to exchange greetings and gifts with friends and relatives. Kids here recreate the ‘scene of Nativity’ and participate in the festivities with immense enthusiasm. 70 per cent among its three million population practise Christianity in Meghalaya.

Immersed in Christmas celebration, choir groups can already be seen singing carols in churches and at public places. Missionary schools and institutions also celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with a reverence, enthusiasm and zeal.

The maximum in the state Capital Shillong will hover in the range of 16°C while minimum will stay close to 6°C. A clear sky and good weather conditions will add to the festivities as people here celebrate Christmas tomorrow.

Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur can also be seen wearing the festive look with decorations and lights all over. Community feasts have been arranged, markets, homes, churches, private and government institutions have been illuminated. Assam and Arunachal Pradesh also celebrate Christmas in their own little ways.

Christmas is widely celebrated in the northeast states and churches here play an active role in the day to day life and culture of people. Mainly clear skies in these states will definitely add to the joy of people here. Though minimums in Kohima are way below normal, Aizwal, Imphal and Dimapur will enjoy near normal temperatures.

The beauty of the northeastern states remained hidden for long but this region is dramatically developing as the new hotspot for both domestic and international tourists.

Fondly known as the "pristine fairy land", northeastern states do not experience harsh winters like North and East India. Therefore, what time could be better than Christmas to explore its charm!
