Fog formation likely over the Northeastern states

fog in northeast post

The northeastern states are bequeathed with a homogeneous topography consisting of mountain, dales, fluctuations and most importantly, close proximity to various water bodies which makes it a fog prone area.

The arrival of winters is marked by the arrival of fog, especially during early morning and late evening hours. As winters are just at the doorsteps knocking to enter north and northeast India, possibility of fog formation during early morning hours has also increased.

During late November and December months, the northeastern states usually witness fog. The fog formation over these areas is basically due to the close proximity of these areas to the Brahmaputra basin.

Since the northeastern states are close to most of the water bodies, the heat absorbed by the earth’s surface is emitted into space. Furthermore, when the surface cools down, a deep layer of moist air present near the ground creates humidity and thus results in fog formation. This type of fog is generally formed on clear sky along with quieter winds.

At present, the northerly north easterlies are prevailing over most parts of the northeast India. These winds are cool and dry. Thus the formation of fog over the area is expected during next few days. Moreover, it may be dense at some pockets as well.
