The feel-like of winter chill started to cover parts of northwest India. Most parts of North Indian regions are now whirling under cool mornings and nights. Both the maximum and minimum temperatures have been dropping steadily over most of the northern plains including in parts of Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana.

In fact, many parts of North Punjab and some parts of Haryana, the districts such as Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Ambala have even observed shallow to moderate fog in the last 24 hours. Mist or haze was also reported in parts of these two states along with in Delhi and NCR.

Fog formation as per Skymet Weather is a general occurrence during the winter mornings and night hours. Skymet Weather states that whenever the temperatures drop on the plains and the sky is clear and wind speed is low, the earth’s surface cools down rapidly during night leading to condensation of air near the ground surface thus leading to the formation of fog.

Moreover, as the air contamination levels are also on a peak, mist or haze formation during early mornings have also become a common scene.

At present, the temperatures across parts of Punjab and Haryana are plummeting and in the last 24 hours, the maximums have seen a drop by 2-3 notches. Moreover, the present wind pattern blowing over the region is also northwesterly that are dry and cool in nature.

These northwesterly flows of winds may further result in the drop-in temperature profile leading to an increase in the intensity of mist, haze and fog formation. Due to this, the visibility in these areas will be poor at many places in Punjab.

Such poor visibility may hamper the road traffic for a short duration for the next few days, but flight and rail delays are not anticipated as of now.
