Fresh Monsoon system in Bay gives heavy rain over Kolkata

August 9, 2016 7:29 AM |

Fresh Monsoon system in Bay gives heavy rain over KolkataKolkata has been receiving on and off rains since the beginning of the month of August. So much so that since August 1 there hasn’t been a day when the City of Joy did not receive some Monsoon showers.

These rains are of light to moderate intensity and heavy rains have not been recorded over the city. In fact, Kolkata did not receive rainfall over 25 mm on any day this month. However, there has been a fortunate turn in tides and the city has received good rains during the last 24 hours.

Kolkata received a whopping 58 mm of rain during the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Monday to 5:30 am on Tuesday. With this the city’s rainfall total has reached to a good 179.3 mm against its monthly average of 352.4 mm.

These rains can be attributed to the fresh Monsoon system in the form of an upper air cyclonic circulation which is currently over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal. The axis of the Monsoon trough is also running in close proximity of Kolkata.

Now, during the next 24 hours, Kolkata will continue to receive moderate to heavy rains as this weather system is expected to persist. In fact, the rainfall intensity will only increase during this period.

At present, Kolkata as a whole is highly rain deficient. The region is witnessing a rainfall deficiency of 25 percent. However, these figures are likely to improve in the coming days as rains will only increase.
