From drought scare to rain surplus, Gujarat emerges alive as Monsoon 2018 picks up pace

Gujarat RainMonsoon 2018 not only made a delayed onset over Gujarat but also kept the state waiting for rains for quite long. As a result, Gujarat was one of the most rainfall deficit state till last few days.

Meteorologically, the state is divided into two pockets—Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Kutch region. In June, the deficiency over Saurashtra and Kutch had once mounted to whopping 92%, Gujarat region saw deficiency over 75%.

June ended on a deficit note and so does, July began on the similar note. However, Monsoon rains that had remained far and few, started making an appearance over the state. Thus, situation started improving gradually.

Major contribution came from July 11-17, wherein most parts of the state recorded good rains, particularly South Gujarat that saw excess rainfall. Following table will show how much surplus rains does the both regions recorded during these days.

These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat that has been persisting for the last 4-5 days. According to Skymet Weather, the system is a semi-permanent feature and till the time it would stay put over the region, it would continue to pound good rains over the region.

These rains have taken out Gujarat from the clutches of drought like situation. As on July 17, Gujarat is now rain surplus by 9%, while Saurashtra and Kutch region was slightly deficient by 14%.

Let us now have a look at the region-wise Monsoon performance:

Gujarat region that can further we divided into two pockets – North Gujarat and South Gujarat.

South Gujarat: Parts of South Gujarat have been the major beneficiary with places like Surat, Valsad, Navsari and Baroda are all rainfall excess. In fact, as the system continues to persist, the region would continue to rainfall surplus for the next few days as well.

North Gujarat: The region includes places such as Gandhinagar, Idar, Deesa and Ahmedabad are just about the normal.

Saurashtra: Parts of region like Amreli, Bhavnagar, Veraval, Junagarh, Mahua are all above the normal mark. In fact, pockets like Dwarka, Okha, Porbandar, Rajkot, and Surendranagar which were rain deficit have also recording hefty Monsoon rains during the last 24 hours.

Kutch: The region was a matter of concern as it had been witnessing mainly dry weather conditions, leading to extremely high rainfall deficiency. However, rainfall activity did make an appearance over the cities of Bhuj, Naliya and a few others resulting in some relief from the previously dry weather conditions.

According to Skymet Weather, the ongoing rainy spell has just come in time, otherwise it could have had an adverse impact on the Kharif season. In fact, weathermen are of the view that second fortnight of July seems to be very promising. We can expect moderate rains with few heavy spells to lash Gujarat during this time.
