Assam Floods: Death toll increases to 34, rains to continue

Uttar Pradesh has been witnessing heavy rains since last many days. Heavy rains of three-digit were also recorded in some parts of the state. Now, the intensity of Monsoon rains is likely to reduce over the state, however, moderate rains will continue.

But due to the heavy rains in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, many rivers of the state are flowing above the danger mark.

Even Nepal has witnessed some torrential rains which has led to flooding of catchments of rivers which have affected the Rapti River flowing near Gorakhpur. Ganga, Ghagra and Yamuna, the major rivers of the state, at present have reached the danger level at few places and at some places it has even crossed the danger mark as well, which may lead to heavy floods.

Reportedly, Yamuna river is flowing above the danger level in Etawah and adjoining areas. Ghagra river is flowing 23 cm above danger level near Barabanki, Gonda and adjoining districts. Even the sacred river Ganga is about to cross the danger level in Allahabad, Mirzapur, and Varanasi. While, rain intensity has reduced over the region but flood situation cannot be ruled out. The threat is still there.

These heavy rains in the past can be attributed to the trough which was extending from Punjab to West Bengal.  A low-pressure area was also persisting over Southeast Uttar Pradesh. Now, these weather systems have moved away and have shifted towards Madhya Pradesh.

Hence, rains will reduce over Lucknow and almost all parts of the state. Weather is likely to become warm and humid. Rains are likely to pick up pace over the state by July 18 and 19 but till then, moderate rains cannot be ruled out.
