Good Monsoon rains to continue over Northeast India

September 5, 2016 12:22 PM |

Northeast Rains

Since the advent of Southwest Monsoon this year, northeastern states of the country have not witnessed heavy to extremely heavy Monsoon rains for a longer duration. That’s the key reason why East and Northeast India is still observing rain deficiency of 16%.

In fact, as on September 4, 2016 the region comprising Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura is rainfall deficient by 22% while the rest of the states like Assam and Meghalaya are rainfall deficient by 33%. It is only Arunachal Pradesh which is close to normal i.e. 9% less than the normal.

During last few days, rain intensity over Northeast India has picked up pace.  A low pressure area is currently seen over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining North Bay of Bengal. This weather system is expected to provide rain over Northeast India, particularly over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh for next 2 to 3 days. These rains will be of moderate intensity with heavy spells at few places.

Till now, all the northeastern states have recorded deficient rainfall. But the good news is that the month of September will be better in terms of rainfall over the regions. These good rains that will lash the entire Northeast India will help in bringing down the rainfall deficiency.
